Marco Polo described Hangzhou as "the most beautiful and magnificient city in the world".
8.15 departure today - we're going by coach for three days to Hangzhou, Wuzhen and Suzhou. Much excitement when, on the way, we saw several new high-speed trains (not all at once). After comfort stop, arrived in Hangzhou around 10.00 and did city tour. We went to Dragon’s Cave which everyone enjoyed. This was traditionally an area where people went to find a matchmaker when they wanted to get married. Hung red ribbons in trees to guarantee a long and happy marriage. (Wish it was that easy in Australia). It was a lovely spot, cool with lots of trees and gardens. I'm surprised at how many Chinese people want their photos taken with US. Especially in out of the way places and they are quite happy to have their photo's taken if asked. Then lunch, surprise surprise, a Chinese banquet, but – this IS China, and food was delicious. Managing to eat more with my chopsticks. After lunch we took a boat cruise on West Lake. Was the weekend and lots of Chinese tour groups but it was very peaceful out on the lake. Visited the green tea plantation where the growing of green tea was explained to us andmany bought tea to bring home - I don't like tea but this was delicious. Checked in at the Sophia Hotel. Rooms smaller and not as luxurious as previous two hotels but still more than adequate. Free internet.
